Exclusive analysis by VNZ Insights reveals that global hydrogen electrolyser deliveries doubled in 2024, pushing the world’s installed capacity beyond 6GW. The surge was led by China, with contributions from Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas, reshaping the global hydrogen equipment landscape.

This analysis was originally published on Hydrogen Insight on 28 May 2025, authored by Leigh Collins and Amish Singh.

1 | The Global Surge: 3.2GW Delivered, 6GW Cumulative Capacity

According to VNZ Insights’ 2024 Electrolyser Market Report Card, the total electrolyser deliveries more than doubled in a single year. By the end of 2024:

  • 3.2GW of electrolysers were delivered to developers worldwide.
  • The cumulative installed capacity surpassed 6GW, up from 2.9GW at the end of 2023.
This growth signals a turning point for the green hydrogen industry, as scaling production capacity becomes the top priority for nations investing in energy security and decarbonization.

2 | Key Manufacturers: Thyssenkrupp Nucera and China’s Emerging Leaders

The top supplier of 2024 was Thyssenkrupp Nucera, delivering 1.04GW of atmospheric alkaline electrolysers to the Neom green hydrogen project in Saudi Arabia. Other leading suppliers included:

  • Envision (0.3GW)
  • Peric (0.25GW)
  • Sungrow (0.2GW)
  • Plug Power (0.2GW)
  • Nel Hydrogen (0.2GW)
Together, these manufacturers accounted for over 70% of all confirmed deliveries in 2024.

3 | Regional Distribution: China Takes the Lead

China emerged as the top destination for hydrogen electrolyser deliveries, receiving 1.44GW in 2024, nearly half of the global total. Other major recipients included:

  • Middle East & Africa – 1.04GW (entirely for Neom)
  • Europe – 0.3GW
  • Americas – 0.2GW
  • Rest of Asia-Pacific – 0.1GW

4 | Technology Trends: Alkaline Dominates Over PEM

The pressurized alkaline electrolyser technology led the 2024 market with 1.5GW of deliveries, followed by:

  • Atmospheric alkaline – 1.2GW
  • PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) – 0.4GW
Among new firm orders (3.3GW total) placed during 2024:
  • Pressurized alkaline: 2.5GW
  • PEM: 0.6GW
  • SOEC (Solid Oxide): 0.1GW
These trends highlight that alkaline technology remains the backbone of large-scale hydrogen production, due to its cost efficiency and maturity.

5 | Top Orders of 2024: John Cockerill, Siemens Energy, and Peric

In terms of firm orders signed, the top manufacturers were:

Most of these orders were concentrated in Asia and Europe, with China, Germany, and India emerging as critical demand centers.

6 | Orderbook Concentration: Five Countries Hold 75% of Global Demand

By Q1 2025, 75% of all firm orders originated from just five countries:

  1. China – 2.8GW
  2. Germany
  3. Saudi Arabia
  4. India
  5. Sweden
Manufacturers with the largest undelivered orderbooks include:
  • Thyssenkrupp Nucera (2GW)
  • John Cockerill
  • Siemens Energy
  • Sungrow
This concentration reveals a maturing global hydrogen manufacturing ecosystem, where a few industrialized nations lead both production and adoption.

7 | Scaling Up: Rise of 200MW+ Projects

The hydrogen market is transitioning from pilot-scale to industrial-scale projects. Facilities exceeding 200MW now account for:

  • 42% of total deliveries
  • 70% of firm orders
Major projects commissioned in 2024, all located in China, include:
  • 105MW National Energy Ningdong Renewable Hydrogen Project (Peric, Verde Hydrogen)
  • 75MW Narisong Three Gorges Inner Mongolia Project (Peric, Longi, Tianjin Mainland)
  • 60MW Xingguo Foundry Hydrogen Metallurgy Project (Peric, Longi)
  • 60MW Damao Banner Project (Phase 1) (Huadian Heavy Industries)
  • 45MW Shenzhen Energy Northern PV-Hydrogen Project (Sungrow)

These Insights Are Derived From The VNZ 2024 Electrolyser Market Report Card

VNZ Insights’ exclusive dataset reveals:
  • Only 43% of delivered electrolysers are currently operational.
  • Pressurized alkaline remains the preferred choice for gigawatt-scale projects.
  • The global hydrogen manufacturing base is consolidating across a handful of suppliers.

This report offers a data-driven perspective for OEMs, EPCs, and investors navigating the fast-evolving hydrogen equipment ecosystem.
